Codex Ultrafast runs GPT-6.1 Sol up to 8x faster, OpenAI says, and costs up to 8x more
OpenAI says Codex's Ultrafast mode runs GPT-6.1 Sol up to 8x faster, and it draws plan usage at 8x the standard rate per token. Also: Anthropic pauses its startup perks, and Google's new agent runs on Claude too.
OpenAI shipped Ultrafast mode for GPT-6.1 Sol on Thursday. OpenAI says it runs Sol up to 8x faster; in Codex it draws your plan's usage at 8x the standard rate per token, and only the $500 Pro plan and some Enterprise and Edu plans get it. Also today: Anthropic paused its Claude Startups perks after 21x the applications, Google's new Gemini agent routes some jobs to Claude, and a popular local-model project scrubbed Claude's co-author line from its git history.

What changed this week
Codex Ultrafast runs GPT-6.1 Sol up to 8x faster, OpenAI says, and costs up to 8x more
OpenAI says its Ultrafast mode now makes GPT-6.1 Sol "up to 8x faster" than standard Sol in Codex, its coding agent. Its own docs back that number only for GPT-6 Astra, the model @OpenAIDevs compares Sol's intelligence to ("Near-Astra intelligence"); the Sol entry says only that Ultrafast supports it. The cost is plain: Ultrafast draws your included Codex usage at 8x the standard rate and purchased credits at 6x, and in Codex ships only on the $500/month Pro plan and some Enterprise and Edu plans; the API offers it to all users. The same pricing-page edit that added Sol's row deleted the line "These billing multipliers don't describe speed increases." It's day four of a 28-day pledge by OpenAI's Codex team to ship an improvement or a usage reset every day. On r/codex, the day's top thread says Opus 5.5 makes OpenAI's models feel "primitive"; another calls Sol 6.1 "slow."
Ultrafast is rolling out today for GPT-6.1 Sol in the API, Codex, and ChatGPT Work.

Anthropic pauses Claude Startups' Team and credit perks after a 21x demand spike
Anthropic's @claudeai account says "we underestimated demand" for the Claude Startups program and is pausing its Claude Team plan and $1,000 API-credit offers while it re-reviews applications. In a post the account quoted, Sarah Wolf says the program drew "21x the number of applications" in its first 48 hours compared with its prior five months live. Some accounts "who had already been approved will not get access to the offer." Credits already claimed stay, and Max and Team plans' separate monthly API credits are unaffected.
We didn’t anticipate the demand for the Claude Startups program. In the first 48 hours of the program, we received 21x the number of applications compared to the last 5 months it’s been live.

We let way too many people in this time, so we’ll need to pause on giving out the Team…
Google's new Gemini agent runs some of its jobs on Anthropic's Claude models
Google announced the Gemini agent, "your new single, universal agent for work," which it says covers everything "from content creation to coding, all from a single prompt box." Its own announcement says the agent "runs each job on the model that fits best — orchestrating across our Gemini family of models and Claude models from Anthropic today." No price or launch date is given; its industry versions are "now in preview for Financial Services and Legal." Neither X's trending feed nor Hacker News carried the launch. We found it through a joke about it from OpenAI's Tibo Sottiaux.

Anthropic bans "sustained and needless" abuse of its models, effective November 12
Anthropic's updated Usage Policy, effective November 12, adds "a prohibition on sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models" — scoped to "extreme cases" of repeated cruelty, explicitly excluding "common versions of user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research." It formalizes a step Claude already takes: ending "rare conversations with persistently abusive users" on Claude.ai and Claude Code. r/ClaudeAI's own thread on the change is running at 927 comments.

Strata rewrote its commit history; its forks still carry Claude's co-author line
Strata, a 19,097-star GitHub project that installs a Qwen model on your own PC, rewrote its commit history, r/LocalLLaMA's top thread of the day reported. We checked. Older forks credit Claude Opus 5.5 as co-author on most commits; the same commits upstream, matched by timestamp and message, have new IDs and no credit. Strata hasn't explained it in its issues or the thread. The thread's top comment (1,151 points) calls the line an ad.
